Balancers for Lithium cells

Even if you do not use BMS for monitoring lithium batteries, you still need to control the equality of the charge of the cells. This is very important when the batteries are cycled more than hunder cycles. No matter how perfect was the production of batteries, they still have a small variation in the capacity. For example, all the cells have 3.3V 90 Ah, model TS-LFP90AHA. But in fact they differ by a couple of shares of ampere-hours. This difference in the cells provokes further difference in voltage level during charge and discharge. At this condition the single LFP cell may be  overcharged or over-discharged. The voltage of such a cell can rise up to 5V or higher or can come down to 1.5V or 0V. Instruction manual tell that such cell cannot be used any more.

Oru German colleagues came out of such a situation. They installed the so-called “balancer” on every cell . The balancer has shunt resistor. The resistor is switched on when the cell voltage is greater than 3.9V. In that case charge current passes through the cell, and through the shunt. Thus, the charging current on that cell will be less than on other cells. At the same time, other cells will be charged without additional load. At the end of the charging cycle, the charger current is reduced. Batteries which are already charged, have an increased level of voltage (above 3.9V). Accordingly, shunt resistors are swithced on. Those cells, which have voltage below 3.9V, are not loaded with shunts. They continue to charge faster. A  LED is integrated in pcb of balancer for visualization purposes.

At the time of publication of an article I’ve covered up to 8500 km, riding on Li cells. During deep discharge cycles cells’ voltage varies in the range of 2.4- 2.7 V. During the charge variation increases. Balancer helps to stabilize the voltage on each cell at the end of charging cycle.
